Can Weight Loss Surgery Prevent Cancer?

September 1st, 2009

They are saying that there are actually benefits to weight loss surgery.  I say this because quite frankly the risks that come with surgery are numerous to say the least, and it’s really not worth it.  But apparently, in some cases it can significantly reduce your risk of cancer problems.  In studies of those who had gastric bypass or other weight loss surgeries, they found a significantly lower risk of cancer and incidence of cancer than those who had not.  They studied over 1000 patients and they followed up for about 5 years.

Essentially speaking, those who get these surgeries have to be morbidly obese, and frankly my guess is they were comparing them to those who were still morbidly obese, not those who had actually figured out another way even after trying “everything else” and had lost the weight by themselves.  Frankly, obesity in itself has been associated with higher cancer risk.  So frankly, it’s not the surgery that causes a lower risk, but the weight loss itself, or at least so it seems.  But of course, that remains to be seen.  They continue to conduct some studies, and some are more conclusive for obvious reasons than others.
